Run to the Hills

It is the middle of summer and unlike last year the weather this time around has been quite bearable. In fact with the timely onset of monsoon there has been quite a lot of unexpected showers. However because of the cloudy skies, the humidity is quite high and when it combines with slightly higher temperatures, it becomes unbearable. And when the sun is in full flow, well its scorching hot to say the least.

Well, this was one of the reasons why I chose one of our beautiful rest houses nestled in the hilltops of the pristine and fragile Shiwalik Hills to while away some time when one of our relatives visited us last week-end. The Forest Rest House at Chohal is hardly 20 kms from the heart of Hoshiarpur town but once you are at the hilltop, you will fell surrounded by hills and greeenery all around, with the perenniel rivulets (locally called “choes”) collecting into the reservoir at the foothills and embanked by an earthern dam. The view, specially at sunset is breathtaking, to say the least.

Today’s teenagers – lost in the world of fast foods, malls, multiplexs etc have very few exposure to pure, pristine nature. My neice, who was one of the visitors was one such. While on the way, she asked whether there was a multiplex nearby. When I said we are going to the jungle she kept quite only to ask whether we would get pizzas. I almost felt bad and had second thoughts about taking them to the hills thinking the liitle kid had come with the thought of enjoying her holidays but here I was taking her to the jungles and perhaps ruining her day…But once we reach the resthouse, I heaved a sigh of relief as she seemed to like the place and gradually started enjoying the beauty of the place.

At least at the end of the day, you have almost home like comfort in midst of nowhere!
